Rising seven stories at Emeryville’s San Pablo Avenue gateway, Nellie Hannon Gateway brings 90 affordable homes above a new home for ECAP, the community food pantry that has served this site for decades.
LPAS designed a U-shaped residential building above a two-story podium, with ECAP activating the street and a landscaped third-floor courtyard anchoring the apartments above. Smooth plaster walls with bold color insets and a large-scale mural by Joaquín Alejandro Newman celebrate Emeryville’s arts community at this gateway corner. Light-gauge steel framing, chosen for cost certainty and fire resilience, keeps this SB35 project efficient and durable.
“Built on Nellie’s legacy of giving” this project turned the historic ECAP site into much-needed affordable housing while giving ECAP a state-of-the-art space to continue its work. -Erin Curtis, Executive Director, California Strategic Growth Council
The project is named for Nellie Hannon, a former Emeryville councilmember and founder of ECAP, whose food pantry has fed the community from this site for decades.
“A fully affordable housing community that will provide stability, dignity, and opportunity for generations of Emeryville residents.” -Sukhdeep Kaur, Mayor of Emeryville
