The A.J. is a 345-unit mixed-use apartment community located in the heart of the Sacramento Railyards—one of the largest urban infill developments in the country.
Named for A.J. Stevens, deemed the “Father of Innovation” at the Sacramento Railyards in the late 1800s, the new development was conceived as a landmark project that bridges the area’s industrial heritage with its dynamic future. The development features a mix of building types, including a five-story podium-wrap structure encircling a four-story parking garage, as well as a separate five-story building constructed at grade. Designed to foster connection and livability, The A.J. offers a landscaped central courtyard with a pool and spa, a rooftop terrace with expansive views, a resident clubhouse, and ground-level retail space. These elements are purposefully designed to activate the street edge and enhance the pedestrian experience in this emerging urban district. In alignment with Sacramento’s housing and equity goals, The A.J. dedicates 20% of its units to affordable housing, supported by financing from the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee (CTCAC). This inclusion promotes a vibrant, mixed-income community within a transit-rich, walkable environment.
